The Story of the Northern Rangelands Trust
By the end of 2012, community conservancies operating under the umbrella of the Northern Rangelands Trust were managing over 2 million hectares of land in Kenya and safeguarding the future of a wide range of species, from elephants to Grevy’s zebra, hirola to rhinoceros. However, the conservancies are about much more than conservation. They are using wildlife to generate the capital needed to help communities improve their welfare and bring peace – all of this in an area blighted by frequent droughts, sparse government services, cattle rustling and ivory poaching.
This remarkable story – a rare example of conservation for the people, by the people – is the subject of this booklet.
